Traffic Events Assets Management Geographic Information System
Client: A Government Department of Transportation
The Business Challenge
The city Department of Transportation oversees more than 6,000 miles of roads and 40,000 intersections. City projects that affect traffic may create road closures. These road closures require teams of workers to put up traffic signs and take them down after the road is re-opened.
The department of transportation needed to build a reusable set of GIS tools for use across multiple projects, platforms, and data stores. These tools would be configurable and allow for creating, editing, and deleting features from a map, and support custom workflows in SharePoint 2010. The workflows would revolve around mapping road closures and directing teams of workers to put up and take down traffic signs.
The Solution
Engroove was sub-contracted to develop a generic suite of configurable GIS tools for creating, editing, and deleting graphic features on a map. The tools were built upon the ESRI SharePoint SDK, using Silverlight 4.0 and C# 4.0. A custom framework was developed to provide a consistent set of map behaviors and hide the implementation details for supporting various geocoding services from Google, Bing, and ESRI.
The Department of Transportation specific business logic was developed into the custom framework and made available to each tool in a generic fashion. Each of the tools, including point, line, polygon, geocoding, reverse geocoding, and intersection lookup, inherits the ability to convert graphics to points on the map, detect overlapping polygons, display address and location tooltips, and enforce validation rules.
The generic suite of tools fully supports the user roles and workflows associated with the Traffic Events Assets Management GIS System (TEAMS) SharePoint website. In the primary workflow, a Requestor uses the custom-built tools to mark the map first. Then a Clerk creates a new work order for the road crew to close the road and add signs. Finally, a Supervisor approves and assigns the work order to the road crew along with a date to start the task.
